The Illustrator's Guide, Omni Gardens, Bah Humbug, encouraging diversity & more

The very knowledgeable James Hughes has been broadcasting his illustration advice for a little while now. And, he’s collated these pearls of wisdom into a book that is packed with helpful advice especially relevant to early career illustrators, but enormously useful to those needing a refresh or update on the current state of this creative industry.Listen
New music that I’ve been listening to is the blissful album ‘Golden Pear’ by Omni Gardens. Purely instrumental, Steve Rosborough has crafted a gorgeous collection of music to switch off from the loudness of our world. By the way, thank you to all who’ve messaged lovely words about my Studio Speakers series - I’m glad it’s being enjoyed.Attend (in Bristol)
The Bristol illustrator meet-up is now hosted by my studio buddy, Jess Knights with the next one a (free) anti-Christmas celebration complete with a card-making activity and a chance to raise an ironic glass to all things festive. Come along and mutter Bah Humbug with me.Attend (online)
Next week (22 Nov) there’s an evening talk by Phoebe on the power of illustration within education and the value of an inclusive and accessible sex education. It looks to be both insightful and thoughtful. Tickets and more details here.Do
Christmas is looming, so here’s my reminder on the importance of supporting creatives: buy from independent shops, directly from sellers online or in-person from gift fairs. A few local (to me) shops that I love are Bam Bristol, Good Store Studio and The Good Book Shop. And, also the Made in Bristol gift fair.Apply
Illustrator, Owen Davey organises 1-to-1 portfolio sessions (with a wonderful range of mentors) to encourage diversity in the illustration industry. These are usually monthly, with details released via his Instagram page. Follow him to find out how to apply.

My current favourite thing to draw in are Leda Sketchbooks - the 10”x7” size (slightly smaller than A4). And, I don’t think I’ll be finding any better. They lay flat, have a robust cover, elastic tie-band and internal back-pocket. The paper is smooth and thick enough to handle ink without showing through. Honestly, I love them! The only annoying thing is that they don’t appear to have a UK sales outlet except via Bezos. If anyone can point me elsewhere, that’d be amazing. (not a sponsored post!)
Oooh those sketch books do look good. If you find a better place than ol' bezos let us know 🙏
